Doctor Soetomo's Love Story with a Dutch Nurse



Boedi Oetomo founder, dr. Soetomo has a love story that is not easy. Even though Dr. Soetomo and his wife came from two continents, two different life paradigms and two different ideals, but their love lasted until both of them passed away and were buried in Surabaya.

Launching from a book by Dhahana Adi, Surabaya Got a Story, Blora became the first place the two people met. After Everdina Bruring's husband died in 1917, she chose to work as a nurse at Blora Hospital to treat her solitude. As fate would have it, dr. Soetomo who was previously in Sumatra was also transferred to Blora. Finally they met and the love between the two grew.

In the relationship between the two there had been opposition. Everdina's family, also family or friends in arms Dr. Soetomo does not support this relationship. Even so, their love is not shaken until they finally decide to get married.

When Dr. Soetomo was given a four-year study assignment in the Netherlands, friends of Dr. Soetomo who is also an Indonesian student often plays to this couple's house. They were captivated by the dishes that Ny. Everdina Soetomo such as fried rice, rendang, soto, and other Indonesian dishes.

After Dr. Soetomo returned from the Netherlands, he was appointed as a lecturer in Skin and Venereology at NIAS (Nederlandsch Indische Artsen School) Surabaya. The man who was born on 30 July was appointed to lead various organizations and form PARINDRA (Partai Indonesia Raya).

To fill her husband's political activities, Everdina also actively prepares various dishes for her husband's friends who often visit the Jalan Simpang Dukuh house or at the GNI (Indonesian National Building) on Bubutan Street.

Although not blessed with children, this couple still feels happy. Mrs. dr. Soetomo fell ill and rested in Claket, Malang. Despite being ill, he remains active in Malang social activities. dr. Soetomo also regularly visits his wife every two weeks.

Until February 19, 1934 at 09:10 am, Mrs. dr. Soetomo breathed his last. The wife died in the lap of her husband who was at that time visiting his wife.

dr. Soetomo did not have any inkling of his wife's departure. Mrs. Dr. Soetomo was buried in Kembang Kuning, Surabaya. Thousands of mourners from various groups grieve even shed tears when hearing the release speech from Dr. Seotomo is very beautiful and deep.

After the death of his wife, dr. Soetomo did not remarry. Until finally four years later, precisely on May 29, 1938, Dr. Soetomo died at the age of 50. At that time, all the citizens of the City of Surabaya gathered on Bubutan Street. The sound of dhikr buzzed the departure of the sons of the nation.

This is proof of the loyalty of Dr. Soetomo in his first and last love. During his lifetime, Dr. Soetomo has shown his loyalty. Not only to his wife, but also to the homeland and the nation of Indonesia.
